THE KARDASHIANS’ WORLD OF CONVERGENCE

Henry Jenkins says ‘we are entering an era where media will be everywhere, and we will use all kinds of media in relation to one another’. In addition to that John VPavlik says media convergence is the coming together of computing, telecommunication and media In a digital environment.  Both these statements correspond to the famous reality stars of the Kardashian family.

The Kardashians’ careers spiralled off from a reality show called ‘keeping up with the Kardashians’ which helped create their fame. However not only do they have their reality show, they now also have their own games and  individual apps that they upload videos of themselves on, from doing make up tutorials to talking about different social topics. From this you can argue that the family use   technological, economic and cultural convergence when it comes to using the different platforms of digital media. Such as being on various types of social media and having their own apps to  keep themselves relevant. Or expanding their name as a brand to bring more money in, and  allowing the audience to become the ‘user’ when It comes to their games. The question I leave for  you guys to answer is that would the Kardshian’s be as famous, relevant and rich if it wasn’t for the combination of both old and the new media?

  1. The Kardashians are definitely a prime example of convergence. In answer to your question, no I don’t think the Kardashians would be as famous or as relevant as they are now if it weren’t for newer types of media. If they only had their reality show to rely on for fame, I think their fame would’ve died out by now. It’s been through social media, apps, etc. like you said that they’ve been able to maintain their relevancy. I don’t even like the Kardashians, but I still follow one or two of them on Instagram. It’s gotten to the point where they’re one of those accounts it’s assumed you’re following because of their cultural relevancy at this time. It makes me wonder if their use of social media will perpetuate their fame for longer or make people get sick of them more quickly.

  2. I definitely think that the Kardashians have become as popular and well-known as they are because they’ve been able to successfully take a career that began on a more traditional media platform (television) and extend/expand it over several other, more “modern” platforms – most notably various social media sites (Instagram, Twitter, etc.) To be honest, I applaud the Kardashian family for being able to maintain such a high degree of fame in this way. In my opinion, they’re all extremely business-savvy, and anyone who is able to recognize and exploit the merging of new and old media so effectively can’t be as vapid as she or he seems.

  3. I really enjoyed this blog post, I thought using the Kardashians as an example for convergence was great as they our very current in our media today. They are expanding to a range of platforms, including each of them creating an app designed to promote their lives. Allowing audiences to become more interactive is a great use of new media.

  4. Actually the whole “Kardashian concept” did not start with a reality (so old media) but thanks to this wonderful dynasty father, a murderer and, mostly, Kim’s private videos leaked online. Probably they would not be as famous as they are mostly thanks to new media and their convergence with old media as the most important exponent of this “tribe” (aka Kim) was able to blend old media (a homemade video) and new media (without the Internet people cannot leak anything).
